Porvay is the Marathi translation of Rabindranath Tagore’s
Chhelebela. It is a chronicle of his own childhood. His birth into an
affluent Brahmin family in Calcutta in 1861. The youngest of thirteen
children, he was raised mostly by servants as his mother had died during
his early years and travel kept his father busy. Porvay lets
the readers know that Tagore’s inspiration to arts and literature was
largely due to the fact that his home hosted a publication house and
many of his family members were musicians and writers. He spent the rest
of his time in taking a swim in the Ganges, practising wrestling and
gymnastics, or trekking the hills. Porvay beautifully captures and describes these wonderful moments of Rabindranath Tagore’s childhood.
