Key To Health

In Key To Health, Mahatma Gandhi, presents readers with a guide to achieving optimal health, which is a perspective that differs greatly from the conventional techniques of modern medicine.
Summary Of The Text
Key To Health was written during Gandhi’s incarceration, in the Aga Khan prison, in Pune city. It was originally written in his mother tongue, Gujarati, which was later translated by his physician, Sushila Nayar.
The book is divided into two parts. In the first section, Gandhi listed each chapter title by some of the common foods people ingest such as caffeine, opiates, water, tobacco and other edibles, and the their impact in the human body. In the second section, he talks at length about the influences of the five natural elements, earth, air, wind and sun (fire), within our bodies.
Key To Health offers simple and easy-to-follow principles in areas such as diet, sleep and exercise. According to Gandhi, ingesting certain foods and having specific lifestyle patterns, could throw these five elements off balance, which was ultimately responsible for ill health. He steadfastly maintained that a healthy body could be achieved by using the five elements as a cure, therefore eliminating the need to visit a conventional doctor.
For Gandhi, achieving good health also encompassed the state of achieving brahmacharya. He fervently believed, that physical sexual acts only ought to be used for procreation and not for hedonistic pleasures. This was necessary in order to save one’s vital energy force, which was the core of achieving optimal health.
