2 States: The Story Of My Marriage (Gujarati) is based on the author’s own life. It tells a story of the confusion and chaos caused by an interstate romance. This is the Gujarati translation of the novel.
Summary Of The Book
2 States: The Story Of My Marriage (Gujarati) is semi-autobiographical. The author is a North Indian who married a girl from Tamil Nadu. This story has parallel characters.
Krish Malhotra is a senior at IIM Ahmedabad. Ananya Swaminathan has just joined the college, and is already popular among the students, being voted the best girl of the fresh batch. Krish meets Ananya one day at the mess. Soon, they spend a lot of time together, and get into a relationship. Their romance continues after they graduate and land jobs. They plan to get married, but there is the big hurdle, they are from different parts of the country. In India this means different cultures, different language, different customs and so on.
They try hard to win the approval of each other’s family. Neither side is ready to give in to the planned alliance, but Krish and Ananya manage to slowly chip away at the resistance. Krish gives Ananya’s mother an opportunity to exhibit her singing talent at a concert and wins her over. He also manages to gain the sympathy and approval of Ananya’s father and brother by helping them in different ways.
Ananya also sets about winning the approval of Krish’s Punjabi family. But the troubles are not yet over for the young couple. Their respective families still have to meet and agree to get along with each other, at least for the period of the wedding ceremony. But the meeting ends in disaster and the families find it hard to get along, as they are too far apart in their customs and traditions. Finally, help arrives from a quarter that Krish least expects it from.
2 States: The Story Of My Marriage (Gujarati) is told in a first person narrative from Krish’s point of view. The story proceeds in a light vein, the stark differences between the two cultures providing fodder for awkward situations and laughter.
