A dramatic story from the Western Ghats about a tuskless elephant,
referred to as makhna, which is believed to have protected the forests
from poachers and timber traders for many years. It became such a legend
that many people still display its photograph on the walls of their
homes. The other hero in the story is a Forest Department official who
has rescued many tigers and leopards from human habitats and returned
them to the safety of the forests. Along with pictures that are like
paintings, Magnificent Makhna weaves these two stories together to draw
the readers attention to the cause of conservation.
